Dance routine DEFINITIONS:
HIP HOP DEFINITIONO ROUTINE EMPHASIZE THE STREET STYLE MOVEMENTS
O EMPHASIS ON EXECUTION, STYLE, CREATIVITY, BODY ISOLATIONS AND CONTROL, RHYTHM, UNIFORMITY AND MUSICAL INTERPRETATION
O ROUTINES SHOULD INCLUDE ATHLETIC ELEMENTS FUNDAMENTAL TO BREAKDANCING SUCH AS: GO DOWNS, FREEZES/STALLS, POWERMOVES, AND FOOTWORK
O NO STUNTING OR ADVANCED LEVEL TUMBLING.
O MAXIMUM TIME IS TWO MINUTES & THIRTY SECONDS (2:30) FOR THE ENTIRE ROUTINE. THERE IS NO MINIMUM TIME REQUIREMENT.
JAZZ DEFINITIONO ROUTINE INCORPORATES STYLIZED DANCE MOVEMENTS AND COMBINATIONS, FORMATION CHANGES, GRoup WORK, LEAPS AND TURNS.
O EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON PROPER TECHNICAL EXECUTION, EXTENSION, CONTROL, BODY PLACEMENT AND TEAM UNIFORMITY
O NO STUNTING OR ADVANCED LEVEL TUMBLING.
O MAXIMUM TIME IS TWO MINUTES & THIRTY SECONDS (2:30) FOR THE ENTIRE ROUTINE. THERE IS NO MINIMUM TIME REQUIREMENT.
MSHSL JAZZ DEFINITION o Routine focus is on jazz moves that incorporate musical interpretation, synchronization, technical steps, visual effectiveness, variety of movements, skills & control.
o May not include more than 5 kicks above the waist.
o A minimum of 1 pirouette must be performed by the entire team, at the same time.
o A minimum of 1 leap or jump must be performed in a Jazz routine, by the entire team, at the same time.
o No stunting or advanced level tumbling.
o Maximum time is three minutes (3:00) for the entire routine. The minimum time requirement is two minutes & thirty seconds (2:30).
KICK DEFINITION o ROUTINE EMPHASIS IS ON CONTROL, HEIGHT UNIFORMITY, EXTENSION, TOE POINTS, TIMING, AND CREATIVITY OF A VARIETY OF KICK SERIES
O NO STUNTING OR ADVANCED LEVEL TUMBLING.
O MAXIMUM TIME IS TWO MINUTES & THIRTY SECONDS (2:30) FOR THE ENTIRE ROUTINE. THERE IS NO MINIMUM TIME REQUIREMENT.
MSHSL HIGH KICK PRECISION DEFINITION o ROUTINE FOCUS IS ON KICK EXECUTION, VARIETY OF KICKS INCORPORATED, TECHNIQUE, SYNCHRONIZATION AND VISUAL EFFECTIVENESS.
O 50-75 KICKS ABOVE THE WAIST MUST BE PERFORMED BY ALL TEAM MEMBERS
O NO STUNTING OR ADVANCED LEVEL TUMBLING.
O MAXIMUM TIME IS THREE MINUTES & THIRTY SECONDS (3:30) FOR THE ENTIRE ROUTINE. THE MINIMUM TIME REQUIREMENT IS THREE MINUTES (3:00).
OPEN DEFINITION o ROUTINE CAN BE ANY STYLE, THEME OR EMPHASIS. (LYRICAL, VARIETY, TAP, KICK (IF NON-SCHOOL), ETC...)
O EMPHASIS ON CHOREOGRAPHY, PROPER TECHNICAL EXECUTION, VISUAL EFFECT, CREATIVITY, STAGING AND TEAM UNIFORMITY.
O NO STUNTING OR ADVANCED LEVEL TUMBLING. PROPS MAY BE USED.
O MAJOR THEMATIC PRODUCTION NUMBERS AND/OR ELABORATE SETS ARE NOT ALLOWED.
O PERFORMERS MUST HAND CARRY ON PROPS DURING ENTRANCE WITHOUT ASSISTANCE FROM OTHERS.
O NO ADDITIONAL TIME FOR SET-UP OR TEAR DOWN. REMEMBER... TOTAL TIME IS 2:30.
O MAJOR SETS ARE NOT ALLOWED.
O ALL STYLES WILL BE JUDGED AGAINST EACH OTHER.
O TEAMS MAY ONLY ENTER ONE ROUTINE IN THE OPEN CATEGORY. (EXAMPLE: YOU CAN NOT ENTER A LYRICAL AND VARIETY ROUTINE AND COMPETE AGAINST YOURSELF.)
O MAXIMUM TIME IS TWO MINUTES & THIRTY SECONDS (2:30) FOR THE ENTIRE ROUTINE. THERE IS NO MINIMUM TIME REQUIREMENT.
POM DEFINITION o ROUTINE FOCUS IS ON SYNCHRONIZATION, SHARP MOTIONS VISUAL EFFECT, STRONG POM TECHNIQUE AND INCORPORATE DANCE TECHNICAL ELEMENTS.
O VISUAL EFFECT INCLUDES LEVEL CHANGES, GROUP WORK, FORMATION CHANGES, THE USE OF DIFFERENT COLOR POMS, ETC
O POMS SHOULD BE USED FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE ROUTINE
O NO STUNTING OR ADVANCED LEVEL TUMBLING.
O MAXIMUM TIME IS TWO MINUTES & THIRTY SECONDS (2:30) FOR THE ENTIRE ROUTINE. THERE IS NO MINIMUM TIME REQUIREMENT.

IS THE FEE PER PERSON?
Yes. The fee covers the competition, game ticket, t-shirt, gift AND MORE!
I AM A MSHSL MEMBER. CAN I ATTEND these EVENTS?
Yes! We will adopt all MSHSL policies and divisions for our event. You can come!
HOW MANY ROUTINES CAN WE DO?
All teams may perform two (2) routines at the event. If a team would like to ENTER AN ADDITIONAL routine, then they would pay an additional flat fee of $100 PER ROUTINE.
DOES EVERYONE GET TO GO TO THE GAME?
Absolutely! A ticket will be given to all registered participants for THE game. Teams will also receive up to two (2) complimentary tickets for coaches. Additional tickets for coaches and/or guests are available at the door.
WHAT IS THIS MEAL DEAL COUPON?
The Timberwolves have put together a great package for anyone attending the UPA Challenge Cup. A complete meal for $5. Meal includes a hot doG, chips and soda. You can order as many as you’d like.
HOW MANY AWARDS ARE GIVEN?
Trophies will be awarded to Top 3 in each division.
WHO PERFORMS AT THE GAME?
Up to 4 routines will perform that night at the game either during pre-game or halftime.

IS THERE A SPECTATOR ADMISSION FEE FOR THE COMPETITION?
NO. ALL SPECTATORS MUST PURCHASE A FAN TICKET. THE FAN TICKET IS YOUR ADMISSION INTO THE COMPETITION AS WELL AS THE GAME.

CANCELLATION POLICY
UPA reserves the right to cancel this event.
Should UPA need to cancel this event, UPA will:
* Let the participating team know within 5 business days of event cancellation.
* Return all monies paid to UPA for this event, including game and meal deal tickets.
* When possible, offer participation (participant will be responsible for expenses) in future events.
* When possible, offer game and meal deal tickets to the team at listed prices in the case the team still wants to attend the Timberwolves game.
* When possible, offer a performance slot during pre-game and/or halftime, if available, with the purchase of game tickets at the fan price.
UPA Will Not:
* Reimburse any transportation chargeS incurred for this event.
* Reimburse any other charges (hotel, car, etc.) incurred for this event.
* Reimburse for any additional persons traveling with said participant.
If Participant cancels:
* Fully refundable 30 days prior to the event less a $50 administrative fee.
* Fifty percent refundable 20 days prior to the event plus a $50 administrative fee.
* All fees paid are nonrefundable 10 days prior to the event. No exceptions. This includes fan tickets purchased. |
